Abstract The microwave oven is now coming into wide use in the home, as one of the necessary appliances of life in Japan. Originally, microwave ovens were developed for commercial use, but now the demand is for home use. In this paper, the growth history of the microwave oven industry in Japan is described, showing the marketing shift from commercial use to home use, with relative figures. The development process of the components installed in a microwave oven is also given, with emphasis on the magnetron.
